What He Says... About Manscaping

There's nothing quite like a shorn scrotum... It's breathtaking... I suggest you try it!"
    - Mike Myers as Dr. Evil in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

Myself, I'm a big fan of clean-shaven faces and fairly bare chests, but let's see what the guys have to say...

* * *

Damon Suede:
Nope. Nyet. Nein. I find it creepy and off-putting. It’s a bit like generic porno-speak during sex. The moment a guy says, “Fuck that ass.” Or “that’s so hot, stud!” anything resembling chemistry gets flushed down the toilet because I know they’re just aping cliches they picked up from low-budget porn improv in the San Fernando Valley. Homos homogenizing themselves? The blanding and blinding of America. That’s depressing. It depresses me.

Manscaping reflects the same cultural impulse. Plucking and buzzing ourselves like a fucking hedgemaze. We aren’t supposed to be assembly line robots. We don’t come out of a can or a mold. No two treasure trails are the same, and why would anyone want them to be? Some folks are hairy, some aren’t. Whatevs. Homogenizing us just guarantees that nothing is authentic and everyone feeds their own anxieties. In a (very) few cases I’ve seen guys groom themselves in ways that may be more appealing, but mostly manscaping is part of the trend to make ALL people live and look the exact same way even if they don’t and can’t. Look: can it work? Sure. Anything can be hot, but nothing is hotter than authenticity.

Stuart Wakefield:
I’m all for it and practice regularly. Some parts I wax, some I shave, and some I pluck, but generally I just cut it back as opposed to off. I feel better after a grooming session and I think it’s worth taking some time out to care for yourself physically as well as emotionally. I’m not excessively hairy so I don’t see it as a huge job. Not having a partner makes it tricky when it comes to my back but, thankfully, that’s my least hairy part. ;)

D.H. Starr:
I get so turned on by a well manscaped body. Every once in a while I’ll do a full manscape, but it’s a real chore since I have a hairy chest. I don’t have any on my back, maybe a few stragglers, but it’s all in the front, the arms, and legs. I need to invest in a good set of clippers so I can clip. That’s the way I’ll look best. Clip it so it’s not all bushy, then keep my pubes neat and trimmer and my balls and ass smooth as silk. Gosh. In answering this question I feel like I’m giving way too much information.

Thorny Sterling:
Around here, we have hardwood floors and shag carpeting. See, I used to think it was almost required, so I started shaving when I was 18. My husband used to manscape -- he’s pretty hairy everywhere -- but I asked him to stop and now I think there are spots I could probably braid if he’d let me. I just like him furry and he likes not having to fuss with it. Now me? I’m not really hairy anywhere to start with but I like the bare look with some of the clothes I wear and it’s not a lot of work to keep me as smooth as Doug’s silky ass. ;)

Edmond Manning:
I don’t manscape. Should I? Yeah, probably. Early in my relationship with my barber, he yelled at me for not trimming my eyebrows. (He’s a wonderful, grouchy polar bear.) I tried to argue my brows weren’t that bad and he immediately plucked the longest one (ow!) and pulled it between his fingers. He said, “I can floss with this. Sit back and shut up.” He now trims my eyebrows, nose hair, and ear hair. Is that manscaping?

Your turn! Do you like a nice smooth chest or a thick downy pelt?

The guys will be back Thursday, June 21st with some deeper thoughts on MM romance vs gay romance.

And don't forget, if you have any topics, questions or photos you'd like the guys to tackle, just shoot them my way. We'll make sure you get the credit.

Miss a previous topic? Check them all out here: What He Says Archives

    1. Well, in that case, I manscape. (Above the neck, I guess.)

  2. Well, I don't shave my chest. ;-) But there's legs and underarms and other bit to take care of. Sigh. But as someone single, with no dates on the horizon, I have been known to let the grass grow as nature intended it, especially in winter when long pants and sweaters are de rigeur.

I've also noticed in winter I find pictures of guys with fur more attractive and in summer smoother. I wonder if it's some kind of primitive attempt to keep warm, assuming that a furry guy would be warmer, but it's like a fur coat, take it off in the summer, too hot.

  3. I'm happy with anything from totally smooth to hairy but groomed. What Edmond describes--essential. I draw the line very firmly at crotches that could audition for ZZ Top.

    1. PD, I'm not sure I could even accept a 'formerly ZZ Top crotch.' I would have flashback memories of what it used to be.

  4. I should have noted we have a poll over at Brief Encounters today. You can pick how fuzzy you like your guys. You can even pick more than one if you're equal opportunity. :-)

  5. I'll put my hand up for a furry guy. There's something quite delicious about a hairy chest that I can't resist. It makes me go all funny inside! My hub is hairy and I've loved watching him become more hairy as he's grown older - from just a few chest hairs when we met as teens to a full chestful now, complete with hairy shoulders - although I'm less happy about the way he sheds all over the bathroom :).

  6. Some hair is nice although shedding is bad... I'm not a fan of very hairy, particularly on the crotch, on either men or women :)

  7. I love hair on the front, but not so much on the back :(

    1. Awww...some of us can't quite help the hair on the back as well as the front. I mean, you can *will* it to grow front-side only, but the genes don't always listen. I once had a friend wax my back to show off my upper back tattoo. He used these 'rip off strips.' Never again.

    2. LOL, this is what happens when you are a nordic midwesterner!

  8. Granted, I don't exactly have a huge lot of experience (it's not like I was *trying* to be a Good Girl, it just kind of...happened) but I don't think I've ever actually been with a guy who manscapes. Of course, some of that may be because the few guys I know who I'm pretty sure do are pretty unbearable people, and I'm genuinely more interested in the inside than the outside.

That said, I have never ever objected to looking! If it's a picture I don't have to deal with potential personality issues, so it's anything goes! ;)

  9. I wonder whether some of it is environmental. I grew up in a family that's relatively non-hirsute (though from a culture that can be the opposite), so I was used to seeing less rather than more.

Not sayin' that we tailor our interests after 'daddy' or anything (we don't need to bring Mr. Freud into the conversation), but I wonder. One cousin has a rather hairy dad, and, so it turns out, is her husband.

  10. Hmm, I think I like both. I am all for some chest hair (my husband is pretty hairy there and I love what it feels like). And I LOVE a good treasure trail! But I can see the allure of some trimming down below. I'm not a fan of full brazilian, but some tidying up is always good. Hey, if we women can do it...

    1. Yeah, but women are tougher than men. C'mon. You know it's true.

I don't understand how some women can stand to get a Brazilian uh...down there. I had a 'rip it out' once thing on my back and that was enough to make me tear up. No way could I let someone get near the family jewels with that medieval treatment.

    2. LOL, good point. I think a good pair of trimmers is more than fine for keeping things tiny. Rumor has it that shaved balls are amazing for both parties but I have no first hand knowledge.

I am a pain wimp myself - I can barely manage my eyebrows! There is no way I could do brazilian.

Oh, and I forgot to add that I totally cracked up at Thorny's "hardwood and shag carpet" comment! Perfect image!

  11. At our house, a little neatening is good, complete removal -- very, very bad. And if he touches his chest hairs, I'll kill him!

  12. I like it all mostly. I have never really been with a really hairy guy but I can definitely see the appeal. I think if that's what you are comfortable doing then by all means trim away! LOL.

  13. I used to be against the furry, but over the years I've gotten fond of a well-trimmed furry chest. Not Yeti proportions, but a little fuzz top and bottom are good/OK. It would be fun to shave completely down below just for some extra sensitivity once and a while :)

I would never try to force a guy to shave for me...of course, I can demand the same treatment ;D

  14. I like men natural. Every time I see those Bel Ami videos with twinks bare as plucked chickens, I wish somebody let a few hairy jocks and bears loose there and let them rampage.

  15. Yeah, yeah, I know I'm late, but I don't have much to contribute anyway. And here it is: I'm pretty much okay with any man who doesn't resemble my ex-husband or have tufted orifices.

Hey, if y'all were as old as I am, you'd also be pathetically easy to please.

  16. I don't really mind either way, but I do have a preference for hairy chest and facial hair. Especially facial hair.
