What He Says... About Superheroes

Superheroes. Who doesn't love them? When I was younger I used to watch Wonder Woman faithfully. She was gorgeous and kicked ass and I wanted to be her when I grew up. We can all dream, right.

A while back I read an article on Relevant Magazine about why we love superheroes, and what they represent in our culture. As with most commentary articles there is something interesting to be found. In this article I took away one quote that pretty sums it all up for me: "Superheroes are colorful incarnations of the human soul."

I like that.

So that's the preview. Now onto the main event. Let's see what the guys have to say about their favorite superheroes...

* * *

Charles Edward:
Hulkling and Wiccan. The first run of Young Avengers was all too short, but it was brilliant. I’m a great fan of continuity in comics, so I loved the way the Young Avengers story wove completely new characters into the great Marvel history and tied them together with such a strong “family” feel. Plus, Hulkling and Wiccan are boyfriends, and maybe you can guess that I enjoy couplings where one guy is big and green-skinned.

Stuart Wakefield:
I hang my head in shame and admit that it’s Wonder Woman. Hang on. . .no, I’m not ashamed of that. I think she rocks. I learned Latin and Greek at school so her mythological background fascinates me as much as all the super-powered wish-fulfillment she embodies (along with nearly every other super-hero).

Edmond Manning:
Wait, I have to pick one? Magik from the New Mutants. Classic plot lines of struggling with her higher nature, plus she looks so badass in a red cape and cloven hooves. I wouldn’t mind giving Thor a tongue bath. Scott Summers (Cyclops of the X-men) because I think he’d be a beast in the sack. But my dream guy would be Colossus of the X-men. He’s an artist (I love men who create visual art) and I really have to know what it’s like in bed when he turns to metal form. Uh... what happens... down there? One moment he’s all man and the next he’s a steel dildo?

Damon Suede:
Alan Moore’s V... brilliant, sexy, magickal. He is a perfect symbol and a complete monster. Give me a hero who knows the cost of things and who’s earned his Kleos any day. I’m not really a comic book guy (though my boyfriend is very much so). But I’d take V in a heartbeat, help him burn down the world, and fuck in the ashes.

D.H. Starr:
I’m tossing between Spider-man and Superman and have finally decided, hell. I’ll take ‘em both thank you very much!

Thorny Sterling:
BATMAN! Gravely voice, all bad boy with a ton of baggage, endlessly wealthy, and covered in the latest toys. Plus, I have his underwear. (Gotta say, though, that Edmond and Damon really have me thinking now... O.O)

Now its your turn. Who's your favorite superhero and why?

The guys will be back Thursday, May 17th, with their thoughts on homophobia as part of the Hop Against Homophobia blog tour, May 17-20th.

And don't forget, if you have any topics, questions or photos you'd like the guys to tackle, just shoot them my way. We'll make sure you get the credit.

  1. Hey, LC! When I was a kid I read Marvel Comics faithfully. I loved the Justice League guys, the FF, Hulk, Submariner. But I really enjoyed the angsty, brooding heroes like Superman and Batman - and NOT when they were twisty about their vapid love interests.

I'm really glad that comics have morphed into graphic novels and are engendering more respect. It's well deserved.

    Thanks!

    1. Hi, JM! I was never much into reading comic books, but I do love some of the big superhero movies. :-) Oh! Channel surfing a few months ago I stumbled on a station that showed old TV shows, like from the 60s. I watched an episode of the original Batman. OMG! It was so hilarious! "KA-POW!"

  2. I was never really into comics/graphic novels, but I was a big fan of that Superman Returns movie and Brandon Routh, which led me to watch the older ones with Christopher Reeve. Beautiful men, both of them. And, of course, is he the Man of Steel...everywhere? ;-)

  3. Alec! :-) I had the biggest crush on Christopher Reeve. *sigh*

  4. Stuart, I'm with you. Wonder Woman and those magic cuffs? And that lariat of truth? She rocked! Let alone the fact that she kept that strapless bodice up regardless of all the acrobatic fighting she did. Now, THAT'S a superhero.

(Didn't she also have an invisible airplane? Or am I confusing her with someone else?)

With respect to Batman (movies), one has to ask, which Batman rendition did you prefer?

Christopher Reeve was a beautiful, beautiful man, throughout his entire life.

And am I the only one here old enough to remember Super Friends?
